Synopsis: This course will present data from the SCI
model system showing the growing numbers of individuals with
incomplete spinal cord injuries as a result of better
medical care at the time of injury. Preliminary findings
from pharmacological interventions for promoting
regeneration in the spinal cord, as well as data emerging
from regeneration studies in animal models of SCI will also
be presented. Possible implications of these data, and a
shift in the way goals are established for individuals with
SCI will also be discussed. The course will conclude with a
debate on how rehabilitation can better facilitate
functional recovery in this population of individuals with
the potential for plasticity in the nervous system.
